Så er der nyt på vej fra drengene bag War of the Ring. Man må godt nok vente til Essen... men måske det er værd at vente på?! Den nye titel er: Age of Conan: The Strategy Board Game.

Developed under license of Paradox Entertainment / Conan Properties, Age of Conan is going to be a massive board game where two or more players will lead the nations of the "Hyborian Age", the fantasy world created by Robert E. Howard, employing weapons, wealth or magic to achieve hegemony over the others. Developed by the same design team of the best-seller War of the Ring (Francesco Nepitello, Marco Maggi and Roberto Di Meglio), Age of Conan is planned to be released in late 2007 and will feature hundreds of beautiful plastic miniatures, a large full colour map of Hyboria, and top-level components.

The greatest nation of the Hyborian Age will fight at the command of the players, in a strife for supremacy which may have only one winner.

The kingdoms of Aquilonia, Nemedia, Hyperborea, Turan and Stygia will fight with armies, magic and gold to subjugate and conquer, but Conan the Barbarian, the greatest Hero of this age, may turn the tide in favour or against any player, treading his sandals on the jewelled throne of a King or bringing victory to his armies as a mighty General.

With hundreds of beautiful plastic miniatures, a large full-colour map of Hyboria, and top-level components, Age of Conan is going to be the most awaited fantasy game of the year.

Nexus Editrice has posted an update on Age of Conan: The Board Game, which is a slightly revised title from what was first announced. A more important change might be in the number of players, which was changed from 2-5 to 2-4. In the initial description, each player would control one of Aquilonia, Nemedia, Hyperborea, Turan or Stygia—but Nemedia (along with other small nations) has been punted into a deck of cards that introduce political, commercial and religious events and give player short-term targets.

As was the case before, Conan is not tied to any kingdom in particular, but he may help those who are skilled in obtaining his cooperation—and somehow managing him. Each kingdom has a unique Kingdom Deck that includes characters, armed units, spells and special events to recreate its character in the game. Conan is pretty much a “force of nature” which players try to push in the right direction through an auction system. While the ability to control Conan could help guide you to victory, it’s not essential to have the big guy on your side—and he could become a threat to your realm if you’re not careful.

According to Nexus, the mechanisms in the game were inspired by their own War of the Ring, but taken in a different direction since the player’s goal is to increase power and influence, not fight a complete war. In addition to lots of dice for various actions, the game includes hundreds of miniatures with different figures for each army.

The new release date given is June 2008, which makes sense as the Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures MMORPG from Funcom (for both PC and Xbox) is due in late May.

Age of Conan: The Board Game – ICv2 ran a news item with this claim in February 2008, but FFG refused to corroborate the release at the time. Now it’s official, and Conan is due from FFG in late 2008.

Fantasy Flight Games will publish the English language version of Nexus Editrice's Age of Conan -- The Strategy Board Game early next summer as part of a simultaneous world release. The game was previewed at Essen last fall (see 'Nexus Editrice to Preview Age of Conan'). The big box board game is for two to four players.



The game mechanic was inspired by War of the Ring, which was designed by the same team, but it has gone through considerable change during development. According to Nexus Editrice, 'The core mechanic is still based on a modified Action dice system, adapted to work with a single pool of Fate dice available to all players.' A new campaign system was introduced in the game, which requires players to win a series of linked battles to militarily subjugate an independent kingdom.
