LAST MINUTE SCOOP: Mr. Jack strikes again at the Olympic Games
An anonymous correspondent has revealed that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is investigating athletes suspected of infringing the Olympic Charter while in Beijing.
Each night since August 8, an unknown athlete has posted a blog on China’s human rights violations and its treatment of Tibet. Mr. Jack, as he is known to the international press and bloggers around the world, has decided to use the unprecedented media spotlight that is on Beijing now to send out these political messages. But in so doing, he or she has contravened the Olympic Charter, which forbids athletes from making political statements while at the Games.
The IOC, which is trying to uncover the identity of the mysterious Mr. Jack, suspects it is one of seven athletes and one trainer, all of whom are staying in the athlete’s village.
Every night, an unknown correspondent goes online and sends a message to the international media, awakening public opinion to China’s human rights abuses and Tibet’s fight for independence.
WHO IS THE MYSTERY CORRESPONDENT?
Somehow, Mr. Jack (as the media have nicknamed him) has infiltrated this group of eight athletes and is taking full advantage of the media spotlight focused on the Beijing Olympics
Will Mr. Jack manage to flout IOC rules one more time and go online again tonight with his message to the media?
KENT GETNOW | USA
Everyone makes a big fuss of the athletes, but hardly anyone spares a thought for their entourage… and no one knows that better than Kent.
Brought up from childhood to believe that America calls the shots for the world, he quite naturally became a football referee.
ANGUS SHARK | Australia
This athlete is a little long in the tooth (not surprising considering his name!).
While all the other athletes have eagerly embraced the fancy new swimsuits that can shave precious seconds off their time, Angus makes it a point of pride to compete wearing a simple pair of old-fashioned trunks.
TOM PUSH | Canada
Olympic torch bearer
Tom was deeply honoured to be chosen as the final bearer of the Olympic torch for the opening of the 2008 Games—especially as he is not an athlete.
The powers that be decided to bend the rules in order to pay tribute to Tom’s late father, the world’s top Olympic gold medallist, who died just a few days before the opening ceremonies.
A champion curler, Tom’s father took the gold at the 1948 Olympics (on his 18th birthday) and again in 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002 and finally 2006, at age 76.
ETHENESH AWAKA | EthiopiaLI LI LEE | China
Daughter of a high-ranking Chinese military officer with excellent connections in the Chinese bureaucracy, Li Li has a huge athletic talent that’s in sharp contrast to her tiny size.
She easily compensates, though, with her incredible flexibility and muscle tone. In the eyes of her home town crowd, she’s a winner every time!
Ethenesh may not be showy, but she’s a reliable and impressive performer. Proud to represent her country, she often leads the pack from start to finish.
SAÏD DE MICELLES | France
Son of Count Charles-André de Micelles and Aïcha, an Algerian rai singer, Saïd has wrestled judo opponents around the world to the mat with effortless grace.
But don’t be fooled: he can turn into a ferocious beast when it’s called for.
LAIKA PAVLOV | Russia
No vault is too high for Laïka, who often remains the sole competitor long after others have been eliminated.
HEIDI POUTZ | Switzerland
Heidi acquired her basic tennis skills as a young girl at boarding school.
Her detractors say that if she would only spend a little time training instead of posing for magazine covers, she could be ranked number 1 in the world.
